Sunday, July 12, 2015,New Delhi: Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif came in for brickbats from Opposition back home, the Chinese media has hailed the accession of two countries to SCO as a “welcome” move which may “ease tensions.”
“India, Pakistan have had troubled relation for a long time. Their coming together in SCO augurs well for both countries and is an indication that they will work together on platform,” the Chinese state-run broadcaster CCTV quoted a South Asia policy expert.
Officially, Shanghai Corporation Organisation(SCO) charter does not allow members to raise bilateral issues on the forum. But commentators were upbeat.
Global Times, the English edition of official mouthpiece ‘People’s Daily’ ran an opinion piece headlined “SCO Welcomes India, Pakistan.”
“Admitting India and Pakistan to the SCO could establish regular membership standards, which can pave the way for further enlargement of the organisation,” Global Times quoted Xia Yishan, a research fellow of Central Asian Studies, as saying.
The research fellow also said that after India and Pakistan, more countries in South Asia or the Middle East may follow suit when the procedure for admittance is clearly established.
“India and Pakistan’s participation in the SCO can help ease the tensions in South Asia and lay the foundation for more regional cooperation on economy, especially under the ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiatives and the Eurasian Economic Union,” Su Jingxiang, a research fellow of Center for Globalization Studies at the China’s Institute of Contemporary International Relations, told the English daily.
